Level 1  (Ages 6–8)

Autumn Term - children focus on developing a strong understanding of number and place value. They learn to recognise, compare, and order numbers up to 100 (and beyond), using objects, images, and number lines to build fluency. Addition and subtraction are introduced through practical activities, using number bonds, counting on, and simple column methods. They begin to explore 2D shapes, learning to name and describe them based on their properties, while also starting to tell the time to the hour and half-hour. Spring Term - learners build on their number knowledge by tackling more complex addition and subtraction problems and are introduced to multiplication and division as equal grouping and sharing. They start to learn times tables (2s, 5s, and 10s) and explore arrays to represent multiplication. In geometry, they move on to recognising and describing 3D shapes, and in measurement, they work with length, height, and simple units like centimetres and metres. The concept of fractions is introduced through halves and quarters, using visuals and practical activities. Summer Term - children develop a deeper understanding of number through place value with larger numbers, basic problem-solving, and mental calculation strategies. They apply their knowledge of the four operations in real-life contexts such as money and time. Measurement continues with mass and capacity, and children read simple scales. Fractions are expanded to include thirds and an introduction to equivalent fractions. The term finishes with simple statistics, such as interpreting pictograms and bar charts, as well as consolidating their learning through games and practical investigations.

Level 2  (Ages 9–11)

Autumn Term - children revisit and extend their knowledge of place value, working confidently with numbers up to 1,000,000. They practise addition and subtraction using both mental strategies and formal written methods, with a growing focus on accuracy and efficiency. Multiplication and division are explored in greater depth, including long multiplication and short division methods. Learners study factors, multiples, and prime numbers, while also developing their understanding of area, perimeter, and formal units of measurement. Work on rounding and estimating helps build number sense and real-life application. Spring Term - introduces more advanced fractions work, including equivalent fractions, improper fractions, and mixed numbers. Children learn to add, subtract, and compare fractions with different denominators, alongside exploring decimals and percentages and their relationship to fractions. Geometry becomes more detailed, with work on angles, symmetry, and properties of 2D and 3D shapes. Position and direction are introduced through coordinates and translation. Learners apply their knowledge in problem-solving tasks and multi-step word problems to deepen reasoning skills. Summer Term - learners consolidate their understanding through applied contexts. Ratio, proportion, and algebraic thinking are introduced in a gentle, exploratory way, helping prepare them for secondary maths. Statistics includes reading and interpreting line graphs and timetables, and presenting data clearly. Children also tackle more complex problems involving time, money, and measurement, applying all four operations. The term finishes with revision, project work, and investigations that allow children to draw connections across topics and demonstrate mathematical reasoning with increasing independence.
