Level 1  (ages 6-8)

In the Autumn Term, children focus on the fundamentals of writing and reading. They begin by learning how to construct full sentences using capital letters and full stops, and explore traditional tales and familiar stories to build their understanding of narrative structure. Descriptive writing is introduced through characters and settings, while basic grammar such as nouns, verbs, and adjectives is embedded throughout. Phonics is revisited, and children work on reading high-frequency words and practising simple comprehension skills. During the Spring Term, learners begin to write their own short stories with clear structure and sequence. They are introduced to non-fiction writing through simple instruction texts and basic information writing. Vocabulary expands alongside more varied sentence structures. Grammar lessons introduce conjunctions, question marks, and plural forms. Reading progresses to early chapter books, with an increasing focus on understanding characters and events. In the Summer Term, children explore poetry, learning to write using rhythm, rhyme, and patterns. Personal writing becomes a focus, including diaries, letters, and recounts of real-life events. Sentence writing improves with greater accuracy and detail, including the use of apostrophes and expanded noun phrases. Guided reading activities help children improve fluency and begin to draw deeper meaning from texts.

Level 2  (Ages 9-11)

In the Autumn Term, older learners explore a wider range of texts, including myths, legends, and adventure stories. Narrative writing becomes more sophisticated, with a strong emphasis on developing characters, setting, and dialogue. Grammar teaching includes fronted adverbials, direct speech with accurate punctuation, and the use of commas and paragraphs to organise ideas. Reading lessons encourage inference, summarising, and predicting based on a deeper understanding of the text, while vocabulary continues to grow through exposure to varied reading materials. As the Spring Term begins, children develop persuasive writing skills and learn how to structure balanced arguments. They study playscripts, perform scenes, and begin to explore dramatic language. Grammar work includes modal verbs, relative clauses, and the use of cohesive devices to link ideas within and across paragraphs. In reading, learners analyse authorial intent, viewpoints, and text organisation, while also comparing texts across different genres and styles. In the Summer Term, students focus on biographical writing, creating both biographies and autobiographies using chronological structure and appropriate tone. Poetry becomes more expressive, with children using figurative language such as similes, metaphors, and personification. Grammar knowledge is consolidated through editing and redrafting tasks. Reading tasks prepare students for assessments, helping them to apply comprehension strategies with confidence. The term finishes with independent reading projects and book reviews, encouraging a love for literature and reflective thinking.
